Eligibility: All players must be on the team roster or have signed a Player Add Form in order to play.
Team Size: Only three players per team are on the court at a time. Teams may begin and play a game with two players.
Game Start: Teams will do “Rock, Paper, Scissors” to determine who has first possession. Possession will alternate thereafter to determine possession for jump balls. The losing team of the preceding game will get first possession of the ball in the next game.
Scoring: All baskets count as one point. Games will be played to 11 points, and teams only need to win by one point. Teams are responsible for keeping track of the score throughout the game and should announce the score prior to checking the ball after a made basket.
Ball Possession : Ball possession changes after each made basket.
Checking the Ball: An imaginary line across the top of the key from sideline to sideline is the “check line.” All possessions will begin behind the check line. This includes the start of the game, after a score, fouls, ball out of bounds, etc. The ball must be checked in by an opposing player before it can be put into play. The ball must then be passed to a teammate to begin play.
Taking it Back : On any live ball change of possession (defensive rebounds or steals), the ball must be taken back behind the check line. The player in possession may maintain control and attempt to score. The player must have both feet and the ball completely behind the check line before the ball can be advanced. Failure to take it back results in loss of possession and any points scored during the illegal possession.
For ¼ court: The imaginary check line is at the free throw line. To start a game, after a score or when a foul is awarded, a player must pass the ball in from this check line after the defense has checked the ball. On defensive rebounds or steals, the ball need only be taken anywhere beyond the line.
Time Outs: There are no time outs in 3x3 basketball.
All games will be self-officiated:
- Three seconds in the key shall NOT be in effect.
- Fouls must be called immediately by the player being fouled.
- No free throws are awarded.
- Common fouls shall result in loss of possession for the offending team.
- Offensive fouls shall result in disallowing a converted basket and loss of possession.
- If an offensive player is fouled in the act of shooting and makes the basket, the basket counts and the ball changes possession.
- If an offensive player is not in the act of shooting or does not score on the shot when fouled, possession is retained.
- An individual cannot foul out of a game but may be ejected by the Athletics staff for any flagrant fouls and/or act of misconduct, physical or verbal, directed toward any individual. Any ejection will result in an automatic suspension for the player’s next game.
- All players are encouraged to play with the spirit of fair play and good sportsmanship.
Disputes: The two teams should mediate questions of judgment. If teams or players cannot agree within 30 seconds, then the player who called the foul will shoot from the top of the key. If the shot is made, his team retains possession of the ball. If the shot is missed the ball changes possession.
Substitutions : Substitutions may be made after a basket or during any stoppage of play. Teams should yell “Sub,” and give the ball to the defense to hold until all players are ready to play.
Game Ball: Home team provides the game ball.
Uniforms: Teams must have uniforms of the same color for all players. Numbers are not necessary.
NO DUNKING/GRASPING THE RIM: Dunking and/or grasping the rim is not allowed at ANYTIME, including pre-game warm-ups and after the game. The offending player will be ejected from that game and the next schedule game. The points will not count and the offending team will lose possession of the ball.
This program is for fun and is dependent on good sportsmanship.
Play to win but do not put winning ahead of being an
honest player and good person.
